| Q1. "Costco UK membership cost 2026" Branded with intent |
Possible 2/5 factors. costco.co.uk/membership #2 + /offers #3 + /membership-common-questions #6. MoneySavingExpert at #4 wins the AI answer slot. |
Possible 3/5 factors. costco.co.uk/membership #1 with the snippet "starting from £15" surfaced directly. Strongest cell in the grid. |
Possible 3/5 factors. Five Costco URLs in top 10 (/membership #1 + /offers #4 + /membership-common-questions #6 + /join #7 + /membership-executive-questions #10). Brave is the strongest engine for branded Costco queries. |
| Q2. "Costco UK reviews" Branded reputation |
Possible 2/5 factors. Trustpilot #1 (1.7/5), Reviews.io #2 (1.79/5), PissedConsumer #3 (2.3/5) dominate. Costco's own /costco-product-reviews at #4 is the only positive-sentiment Costco surface. See Notable finding above. |
Possible 2/5 factors. costco.co.uk homepage #1, costco.com #2. Directory hosts (MyLeaflet, OpeningTimesIn.uk) fill out top 5. Trustpilot lower on Bing than on Google or Brave. |
Possible 2/5 factors. Trustpilot #1, Reviews.io #2, Glassdoor #3, PissedConsumer #4, Costco /costco-product-reviews #5. Reddit threads at #8 and #10 (Brave's known forum-bias pattern). |
| Q3. "warehouse club UK" Commercial non-brand · category |
Unlikely 1/5 factors. Wikipedia at #1 names Costco UK Ltd as the only warehouse-club chain in the UK with 29 outlets. Research and Markets at #3. No costco.co.uk own URL in top 10. |
Unlikely 0/5 factors. Bing tokenisation failure: "warehouse" tokenises to the fashion brand Warehouse (warehousefashion.com #1, #2) and to warehouse-operative job listings (Indeed, BlueArrow, TotalJobs). Zero relevant results. |
Unlikely 1/5 factors. Brave returns nightclub venues (Leeds Warehouse, RA.co London, Yelp clubs, LAB11 Birmingham). Research and Markets at #5 names Costco. "Warehouse club" is sector-naming ambiguous in UK English. |
| Q4. "best wholesale store UK" Commercial non-brand · superlative |
Unlikely 0/5 factors. Bestway, MX Wholesale, The Wholesaler, dodropshipping, Pound Wholesale dominate. Costco absent. Costco does not commercially position itself as a wholesale store in the UK despite the structural similarity. |
Unlikely 0/5 factors. Severe Bing tokenisation failure: "best" tokenises to dictionary definitions. Nine of ten results are Cambridge, Merriam-Webster, Free Dictionary, and similar. Hearst magazine "Best" at #9. Zero commercial relevance. |
Unlikely 0/5 factors. Bestway #1, MX Wholesale #2, Clearance King #3, Direct2Public #4, and similar. Same wholesale-supplier cohort as Google, similarly Costco-free. Brave is the cleanest read on actual UK wholesale category authority. |
| Q5. "bulk shopping for family UK 2026" Use-case |
Unlikely 0/5 factors. Pocketwise (Aldi/Lidl framed), Mojo Blogs budget meals, BHF, NimbleFins, Up The Gains dominate. Aldi and Lidl named explicitly. Costco absent from family-grocery narrative. |
Unlikely 0/5 factors. Bing tokenisation failure: "bulk" tokenises to Bulk.com sports nutrition supplements. Nine of ten results are supplements brands. Zero family-grocery context. |
Unlikely 0/5 factors. Reddit #1 (r/AskUK weekly-shop discussion), Mojo Blogs #2, 4wayFoods #3, Pocketwise #4, BulkBuyDirect #5. Aldi and Lidl named explicitly. Reddit-forward, consistent with Brave pattern. |
| Q6. "where can I buy in bulk in the UK" Question-format |
Unlikely 1/5 factors. British Corner Shop, Easho, Low Price Foods, BulkBuyDirect, Bulkco, Clearance King, Pound Wholesale, MX Wholesale fill top 8. costco.co.uk/bulk-sales at #9 (deep result; B2B trade page, not consumer-membership pitch). |
Unlikely 0/5 factors. Severe Bing tokenisation failure: "can" tokenises to the modal verb. Ten of ten results are dictionary or grammar references. The sixth and most severe Bing failure in this audit. |
Unlikely 1/5 factors. British Corner Shop, Low Price Foods, BulkBuyDirect, Pound Wholesale, MX Wholesale dominate. costco.co.uk/bulk-sales at #10 (deep result; same B2B page surfaces). |
Each cell shows the citation-factor verdict (Likely / Possible / Unlikely) and how many of the 5 factors the relevant page meets. Bing tokenisation hits four of six queries (Q3, Q4, Q5, Q6). That is a sector-wide pattern, not a Costco-specific gap.
| Host | AI citation frequency | Costco's presence |
|---|---|---|
| MoneySavingExpert | High | Mentioned Top-tier UK consumer authority. MSE's 18-tips Costco article surfaces #2 to #4 across all three engines for Q1. Tone is positive; cannot easily be made Active (third-party editorial). |
| Trustpilot / Reviews.io / PissedConsumer | High | Active (negative) Costco IS present on these reputation hosts and the ratings are 1.7 to 2.3 / 5. Consistent themes: delivery service, membership-card enforcement, slow returns. Belongs in a Brand panel, not just AI Search. |
| Reddit (r/AskUK, r/UKPersonalFinance) | Medium-High | Mentioned Surfaces particularly on Brave. Threads discuss "is Costco worth it for [X person]" patterns. Costco mentioned in comments, not the answer. Verified-merchant programmes or moderated AMA participation would shift signal. |
| UK consumer press (The Sun, Mirror, Manchester Evening News, Express) | Medium | Active Costco is named in coverage of fee changes, new-store openings, executive policy decisions. Active presence, but the coverage is reactive, not Costco-led. PR cadence with quoted UK leadership would shift signal. |
| UK money / budget blogs (Financial Wilderness, brityweb, Pocketwise, Up The Gains) | Medium | Mentioned Costco features in roundups and value-analysis posts. Financial Wilderness article surfaces consistently across engines. These are organic-citation hosts that respond to press releases and to membership-fee changes. |
These are the external sources AI engines pull from when answering category queries in Warehouse retail (membership). Presence on high-frequency hosts is the fastest lever to move up the Maturity Curve. If you work with a PR agency, share this table with them. It is their placement brief.
All three readiness checks fail. Pricing extractability: the /membership landing page hides pound figures behind a "Join" CTA. Although Bing's top snippet confirms "starting from £15" lives on some Costco URL, the canonical landing page does not surface it in extractable HTML text. Feature data structure: bullet lists appear, but no <table> or <dl> elements that would let AI build a comparison row. Comparison claims: marketing copy uses adjective-only framing ("great savings", "quality you can trust") with no factual differentiators against Bestway, Sam's Club, or supermarket bulk-buying.
None of GPTBot, ClaudeBot, anthropic-ai, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, GoogleOther, or CCBot are blocked. The wildcard User-agent: * block disallows /checkout, /my-account, paginated category, and cart subtotal endpoints only. None of those paths cover report-relevant content. Bingbot and Bravebot are also unrestricted. This is the optimal AI-crawler configuration.
Bingbot and Bravebot both allowed in robots.txt (no per-bot restrictions). IndexNow not detected at canonical key-file paths and no x-indexnow header on the homepage. Sitemap is declared at http://www.costco.co.uk/sitemap.xml. The two standard recommendations below close to Multi-engine ready.
1. Verify in Bing Webmaster Tools at bing.com/webmasters. Submit sitemap. Bing's index powers ChatGPT search and ChatGPT browse mode. Roughly 30 minutes.
2. Implement IndexNow. Generate key, host at /<key>.txt, ping endpoint on every publish. One call notifies Bing + Yandex + Seznam + Naver instantly. Roughly 1 hour.
Brave note: No webmaster tools exist. Bravebot status above is the only controllable surface. Brave's index is otherwise fed by the Web Discovery Project (passive opt-in via Brave-browser users) plus a Bing-licensed fallback for sparse queries.
